How to Finish Your Nursery Before Your Due Date

Linen Shell Mat – Beige

If you’re wondering how to finish your nursery before your due date, start with the practical basics first — measurements, furniture lead times, and the essentials that need to be in place before baby arrives.

At some point during pregnancy, the nursery becomes this giant mental tab open in your head.

Cot. Mattress. Storage. Decor. Walls. Delivery times. Measurements. What fits. What doesn’t? What if the furniture doesn’t arrive? What if it does and it doesn’t fit through the door? What colours, and style, and what about the theme?

And suddenly, what should be a joyful project becomes one more thing on the list.

So let me say this straight.

There is no time to waste.

If your due date is creeping closer and the room still looks like a random storage corner with baby clothes thrown on a chair, this is the moment to stop fantasising about perfect pastel Pinterest rooms and start doing what actually needs to be done.

Because honestly, a functional nursery ready before birth beats a perfect one finished 4 weeks after baby arrives.

Every single time.

And what if? ….

And what if you want to design your nursery with AI apps? AI will give you a super sweet design. Everything will look cute, quick, and perfectly put together. But then ask yourself — where exactly are you going to get that furniture from? Will it actually fit your room? Is your space even big enough for that layout? And then you open Pinterest and start searching… and searching… and comparing… and second-guessing. That part can take a while. So AI could be a great source of inspiration, but it’s not a reliable help for your real-life nursery project.

Check my Guide to Free Design Software if you want to do it all on your own. It’s not AI — it shows real tools for real planning. Read more here

First Things First — You Are Going Nowhere Without Measurements

If you want to make this project quick and with no extra frustration, seriously. Do not buy anything without checking all those details that could be most important.

Take the measuring tape and get the basics down:

  • full wall width
  • length of the room
  • window width
  • radiator position
  • sockets
  • door opening
  • wardrobe recess/alcoves
  • space needed to walk around the cot

This is the foundation. Without it, everything else is guessing.

And guessing is how people end up crying over returns, searching, buying again and again. You don’t need to do it. Measure first. Here’s the list of handy apps to make it a digital style.

Furniture First. Always.

I know.

I sell nursery decor on this website.

And still I’m telling you this.

Do not start with decor.

Start with practical basics.

Always.

The nice part comes later.

First, ask yourself:

Where exactly are you getting the furniture from?

Not “somewhere”.
Not “I’ll see later”.

Exactly where?

Make a shortlist of shops.

Online.
In-store.
Second-hand quality furniture.
Custom-made.
Whatever works.

Then go on the hunt.

But remember this — and this part is crucial.

Furniture takes time.

Usually:

  • at least 2 weeks of manufacturing
  • or/plus 2 weeks for delivery
  • several trips to the shop, lead time
  • sometimes more

Which means if you leave it too late, the baby may arrive before the cot does.

This is why time matters so much here.

Furniture is not a last-minute decision

My Philosophy — Buy Once, Use for Years

This is where my approach is different.

I am not into throwaway nursery design.

I don’t believe in buying an entire room only to redo everything in 2 years.

That’s not sustainable.
That’s not practical.
And honestly, it’s not common sense.

In Ireland, we’d say:

It’s just the cop on

Good long-term furniture is not “extra”. It is what saves your future self.

Instead of changing everything at the toddler stage, you can be sorted until at least the 3rd or 4th class. Yes, I know what I’m talking about, and I know how to do it.

Imagine that.

Instead of running through IKEA with a toddler hanging off your leg and another shopping list in your hand…

You can spend your time looking after baby number 2 or simply giving yourself some time to rest.

That’s the goal.

Yes, you save the planet.

But most importantly?

You save your mental health.

Decor Should Work Hard Too

The same philosophy applies to decor.

Decor should not be just pretty.

It should do a job.

Good quality cushions?

They are:

  • play zone
  • soft landing space
  • reading corner
  • sleep accessory
  • styling piece

One product.
Multiple jobs.

Same with floor mats.

Same with storage baskets.

Optimise the decor.

Invest in quality.

Think long-term.

Sustainability is not a trend here. It’s just practical sense.

The Mattress — Don’t Forget This One

Very important.

Furniture companies often do not include the mattress.

People forget this all the time.

Then the cot arrives.
Looks beautiful.
And the baby still has nowhere to sleep.

This is exactly why I cover these details in the Nursery SOS e-book, because these are the little practical things nobody tells you until it becomes stressful. It’s super practical, low price, and you can save hours.

So once cot dimensions are final, get the mattress sorted immediately.

Do not leave this to later.

Then Comes the Nice Part — Style, Theme, Decor

Now yes.

Now you can fantasise.

This is where the fun starts.

Theme.
Wall finish.
Artwork.
Cushions.
Pillows.
Rugs.
Mood.

And yes, ideally, the furniture you’re buying first should match the style. But it’s easier to match the decor to the furniture than the other way round.

Function first.
Beauty next.

Then layer the magic.

Want Both? Style + Practical Basics

If you want both — a functional pack with furniture, plus style/theme matched with it — this is exactly why I created my Ready Nursery Packs.

If you still feel overwhelmed about finishing your nursery before your due date, check out the Nursery Ready Pack to get the idea, furniture, and layout sorted quickly.

I created these ready room concepts for:

  • girl nursery – yes, in pink, typical, soft colours, delicate mermaid theme
  • boy nursery – yes, blue but also mixed with soft grey and green, main theme about Dolphins and friends
  • gender neutral – magical, beige, and soft, lovely alternative if you want it the neutral way

Ok, now, how the pack will help you:

  • clear furniture direction
  • styling concept – two options to choose from – different wall finish, different colour options, you won’t be stuck on one vision you may not like.
  • decor ideas – you can follow fully or adapt to your own room, only smart design, solid finish, no cheap throwaway pieces
  • long-term room thinking – furniture list given with description of how they work and how you can optimise them (multifunctional)

And honestly, even if you don’t use the exact design, for 27 it gives you a clear view of what is actually involved.

Sometimes seeing the whole room planned is what removes the panic.

More nursery packs are coming too.

And if none feels right?

I can create one just for you.

Final Thought — Stop Waiting for the Perfect Moment

The perfect moment does not come.

The due date does.

So start with the tape measure.

Then furniture.

Then the mattress.

Then style.

One step at a time.

No panic.
No chaos.
No last-minute IKEA marathon.

Just one clear practical plan.

This is available through a Nursery Coordination Pack and Nursery Design Consultation.

You can buy the exact room concept through the Nursery Coordination Pack, where I help you source the furniture, décor, and everything needed to bring this room to life.

Or, if you would like this design adapted to your own room size and layout, you can book a Nursery Design Consultation, where we work through your space, measurements, and practical decisions together.

You can choose one, or combine both if you want full support from concept to final room.
